If you're staying in Hvar with children and can only pick one beach in the Pakleni Islands, the answer is Mlini. We've been recommending it to families visiting the area for over a decade and it never fails: a sheltered cove, clear water that stays shallow for many metres, a quiet beach bar, natural pine shade right down to the water's edge and just 10 minutes by boat from Hvar harbour.
In this guide I'll tell you exactly what the bay is like, what Lola Beach Bar offers, how to get there from Hvar and why it's the most practical option in the archipelago for families or anyone who just wants a hassle-free beach day.

What Mlini Bay is like
Mlini occupies a long cove on the east side of Marinkovac, the island closest to Hvar (just 10 minutes by boat). It's the nearest cove in the archipelago and the first one you see from the old harbour when you look out to sea.
What makes it special for families is the shape of the bay: the seabed slopes very gradually, staying shallow for 30-40 metres from the shore. That means 4-5-year-olds can stand up in the water without any trouble, and the little ones have a safe area to play.
The seabed is pebbles and fine shingle, much gentler than at Stipanska. Even so, water shoes make getting in more comfortable. Around the cove, the pine trees reach right to the edge giving natural shade for much of the day, and the rocky sides form natural shelters where small fish swim — a good spot for a child's first snorkelling.
The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly: mostly visitors with children, quiet couples and sailing boats stopping for lunch. Although it's 5 minutes by boat from Stipanska (Carpe Diem), the electronic music doesn't reach here because the island's terrain blocks it.
Lola Beach Bar and Mlini's beach bar scene
The social hub of the bay is Lola Beach Bar, a laid-back beach bar open from June to the end of September. It serves light meals (salads, sandwiches, toasties, cheese and charcuterie boards), grilled fish as a dish of the day, cocktails and coffee. Prices are reasonable compared with Palmižana or Carpe Diem: 10-20 € per main course, 7-10 € for cocktails.
There's also sunbed and parasol hire for 10-20 € a day, usually with a minimum spend included or charged separately. The background music is gentle chill-out, with no beach-club pretensions — perfect for families and for couples who want to chat.
In July and August, at lunchtime (13:00-15:00), it's worth booking a table or arriving before 12:30 to make sure you get a spot in the shade.
How to get to Mlini from Hvar
1. Water taxi from the old harbour (recommended)
The most direct and cheapest way. The water taxis leave Hvar's main quay continuously between 9:00 and 19:00 (later in July and August). The crossing takes 10 minutes and costs between 7 and 10 € per person each way.
As it's the nearest cove, water taxis to Mlini are the most frequent in the whole archipelago — you rarely wait more than 15-20 minutes on the quay.
2. Licence-free boat hire
A Pasara 5HP (up to 5 people, no boating licence needed) can be hired for 80-150 € a day. It gives you complete freedom to combine Mlini with Stipanska y Zdrilica (same island, 5-10 minutes by boat) or go further to Palmižana.
3. Organised tour
Some full-day tours from Hvar include a stop at Mlini along with other beaches. Our Blue Cave and 5 Islands tour from Hvar loops around the Pakleni Islands as well as the Blue Cave, ideal if you want to see a lot in a single day.
Why Mlini is the best choice with children
After years of recommending beaches to families visiting Hvar, Mlini is always my first choice when there are children of any age. Here's why:
- Short crossing: 10 minutes from Hvar, so children don't have time to get seasick or bored.
- Shallow water: 30-40 m from the shore at adult waist height, perfect for children to play with a rubber ring or learn to swim.
- No waves: the cove is sheltered and the water stays calm even when the wind is from the south.
- Natural shade: the pines come almost down to the water. No need to fight over a parasol.
- Family-friendly bar: Lola Beach Bar has ice creams, soft drinks and simple food. No dress code and no loud music.
- Toilets on site: the bar has toilets and a free outdoor shower for customers.
- No electronic music: although Stipanska is 5 min away by boat, the noise doesn't carry.
- Beginner snorkelling: the rocky sides have small fish and shallow water, perfect for a child trying out a mask and snorkel for the first time.
Combining with other Pakleni beaches
If you hire a boat or have the whole day, Mlini combines really well with:
- Stipanska (Carpe Diem): 5-10 min by boat. If the family splits up (teenagers vs little ones), a couple can head to Stipanska in the afternoon while the rest stay at Mlini.
- Zdrilica: 5-10 min by boat. Another family-friendly option, with a better restaurant than Mlini if you want a more proper lunch.
- Palmižana: 20 min by boat. If you want to eat at a more upmarket restaurant (Toto’s, Meneghello), book a table and combine it with a morning at Mlini.
Best time to visit Mlini
June and September are ideal: water at 22-24 °C, pleasant warmth, hardly anyone around. Lola Beach Bar keeps normal hours but you don't need to book.
July and August are the busiest months, but Mlini copes well with the crowds because the bay is wide. The water reaches 25-26 °C. During these weeks, book a table for lunch at the bar.
May and October: the bar has reduced hours or opens only at weekends. Water at 18-20 °C, too cold for many.
From November to April, the beach bar closes and the water-taxi service is very limited.
What to bring to Mlini
- Water shoes or aqua socks for the children (the pebbles are fine but get uncomfortable after a while)
- Rubber rings, armbands or pool noodles for young children
- Mask and snorkel — an ideal spot for children to start snorkelling
- Water-resistant sun cream and a cap
- Towels, a change of clothes and a bag for sand/wet things
- Cash in euros (water taxi) and a card (the bar accepts both)
- Water and snacks for the children if you don't want to rely on the bar
- A portable parasol if you're going at the peak of August (the best shady spots fill up fast)
Mlini vs other Pakleni beaches
- Mlini vs Stipanska: Mlini is family and calm. Stipanska is Carpe Diem and partying. Same island, opposite vibes.
- Mlini vs Zdrilica: both family-friendly and quiet. Mlini is closer to Hvar (easier to reach), Zdrilica has a better restaurant.
- Mlini vs Palmižana: Palmižana is food and sunsets for couples. Mlini is the children's beach with a simple bar.
- Mlini vs Jerolim: Jerolim is a traditional naturist beach, not recommended with children. Mlini is the clothed option.
Mlini FAQ
Is Mlini the best Pakleni beach for families?
Yes, without a doubt. The combination of a short crossing from Hvar, shallow water, a fine-pebble seabed, pine shade and a simple beach bar makes it the number one choice for families with children of any age.
Is there natural shade at Mlini?
Yes, the pines come almost down to the water and give shade for much of the day. You can also hire sunbeds with parasols at Lola Beach Bar (10-20 €/day).
Is there sand at Mlini?
No, the seabed is fine pebbles and small shingle. It's much more comfortable than the large stones at Stipanska, but water shoes are still handy.
How far is Mlini from Stipanska?
On the same island (Marinkovac), about 5-10 minutes by boat along the coast. On foot it's not direct because you have to cross steep terrain, so it's better to go by boat.
Are there toilets at Mlini?
Yes, Lola Beach Bar has free toilets and an outdoor shower. It's one of the things that sets it apart from the archipelago's smaller coves.
Can I get there by kayak from Hvar?
Yes, it's 1.5 km and takes 30-40 minutes at a gentle pace. It's the healthiest and cheapest option if you're a couple without children.
Is there nudism at Mlini?
No, it's a family beach where swimwear is the norm. For naturism in the Pakleni Islands, the traditional option is Jerolim.
Until what time does the return water taxi run?
The last water taxi from Mlini to Hvar usually leaves between 19:00 and 20:00 in high season, earlier in May and October. Ask about the timetable when you get off.
Is there a supermarket or pharmacy at Mlini?
No, the island is uninhabited and the only facilities are at Lola Beach Bar. If you need anything (medicines, nappies, special food for children), buy everything in Hvar before you leave.
Is Mlini worth visiting?
If you're travelling with children, Mlini is a must. It's one of the few places where the Pakleni Islands become easy to enjoy even with a baby or toddler: short crossing, safe water, relaxed beach bar, natural shade. Families who end up at Stipanska because they didn't know better always regret it.
If you don't have children, Mlini is still a great option for a relaxed beach day without spending what Palmižana costs or dealing with Stipanska's party scene. It's the honest middle ground of the Pakleni Islands: not too touristy, not too remote, not too expensive.
